Ghana Mourns as Legendary Striker Wilberforce Mfum dies at 88

Ghanaian football mourns the loss of legendary striker Wilberforce Mfum, who passed away at 88.

Mfum made history at the 1963 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring Ghana’s first-ever goal at the tournament and a brace in the final against Sudan, leading the Black Stars to their maiden continental triumph.

 

Mfum had a distinguished career, scoring 20 goals in 26 appearances for Ghana and featuring at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. He played for Asante Kotoko before moving abroad to play in the US, where he featured for clubs like Baltimore Bays and New York Cosmos.

In 1970, he was joint top scorer in the American Soccer League, showcasing his impressive skills.

 

Mfum’s legacy extends beyond his on-field accomplishments. He was a trailblazer for African players, paving the way for future generations.

His experience playing in different leagues and countries helped bridge cultural gaps and promote African football globally.
