Ghana Launches Agenda to Protect Water Bodies from Pollution

Ghana’s new agenda to protect its water bodies from pollution is a significant step forward, especially in mining areas. The inauguration of the Recruited River Guard in Ezinlibo, Jomoro constituency, Western Region, marks the beginning of this initiative.

The Public Relation Officer of Lands Commission, Mr Dela Edem mentioned, Recruited River Guard will focus on surveillance, regulations enforcement, and protection of water bodies, aiming to prevent water pollution.

Water pollution is a severe issue in Ghana, with about 60% of its water bodies polluted, mostly due to illegal mining activities, industrial waste, household disposals, and farming. The consequences of water pollution are dire, including disabilities in newborns, contaminated drinking water, and scarcity of water in the system.

To combat this issue, the Minerals Income Investment Fund (MIIF) and the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) have launched “Operation Clean the Water Bodies,” a technological initiative to revive Ghana’s polluted rivers. The project has already shown impressive results in pilot phases, reducing turbidity, total suspended solids, and lead contamination in rivers.

The success of these initiatives relies on collective effort and cooperation among stakeholders, including local communities, government agencies, and civil society. By working together, Ghana can restore its rivers, prevent further pollution, and ensure a healthier environment for future generations.
