Ghana has the best democratic records in the African continental subregion – Agbai Eke Agbai, PhD

Agbai Eke Agbai PhD, Executive Vice President for Center for Policy and Foreign Engagement and BOT member President Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), says Ghana has demonstrated the best democratic records ever found in the African continental subregion.

Agbai Eke Agbai’s comments further emphasize his belief in the strength of Ghana’s democracy, especially highlighting the country’s ability to engage in meaningful political discourse even in the face of challenges like election-related deaths.

His point about the nation’s commitment to democratic values — where even the tragic loss of eight lives during an election becomes a national conversation — illustrates the country’s sensitivity to the sanctity of life and the democratic process.

Regarding the NPP’s internal dynamics, Agbai seems critical of Nana Addo’s decision to back Dr. Bawumia, suggesting that the choice was more about control than genuine party unity.

He implies that Nana Addo’s preference for Bawumia over other potential candidates, like Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, was driven by the desire to maintain influence over the leadership, which, according to Agbai, alienated public sentiment and led to a backlash.

Agbai also raises a broader concern about African governance, criticizing the lack of emphasis on reading and knowledge in the African context.

He argues that this cultural gap in seeking knowledge — and by extension, the failure to engage critically with governance — contributes to the challenges the continent faces.

His view that money can only take a leader so far when the people stand firm highlights his belief in the power of the electorate and the limitations of financial influence in securing political power.
