Ghana Government Considers Sending Fans to 2026 World Cup, Launches Fundraising Drive

The Government of Ghana is considering plans to send a contingent of Ghanaian supporters to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the final number of fans dependent on the success of a newly launched national fundraising campaign.

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, confirmed the development in a radio interview, stating that the policy direction to support the Black Stars with travelling fans has already been established.

“The policy that we should take fans is clear. It is clear that we should work at it, and that is why we have set up a fundraising committee,” Adams said.

“The number we would take ultimately will depend on how much we raise.”

The initiative is aimed at ensuring strong and visible support for the Black Stars at the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

To achieve this, a dedicated fundraising committee has been tasked with mobilising resources to cover travel, accommodation, and related logistics for selected supporters.

Acknowledging the financial demands of the project, the minister appealed for widespread national support, describing the effort as a collective responsibility.

“This is why we are appealing to corporate bodies, companies, mining firms, and well-meaning individuals to come on board and support this initiative,” he added.

Although no specific targets have been set regarding the number of fans to be transported, Adams stressed that participation would be directly tied to funds raised through the campaign.

The move represents a deliberate effort by government to recreate Ghana’s passionate home support on the global stage, as the Black Stars prepare for a challenging Group L campaign against England, Croatia, and Panama.
