Ghana Crash Out of 2026 Futsal AFCON Qualifiers After 8-6 aggregate Loss to Zambia in Lusaka

Ghana’s national futsal team, known as the Black Stallions, has been eliminated from the 2026 Futsal Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers after a 2-0 loss to Zambia in the second leg, played on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at the Automotive Futsal Arena in Lusaka. This result confirmed an 8-6 aggregate defeat over the two-legged final-round tie, denying Ghana a spot at the continental finals scheduled for April 11-21, 2026, in Morocco.

The first leg, contested on February 3, 2026, at the University of Cape Coast Sports Hall, produced a captivating 6-6 draw that showcased attacking flair from both sides. Ghana twice built leads, including a two-goal advantage at one stage, but Zambia fought back resiliently to level the score multiple times, ensuring the tie remained finely balanced heading into the return fixture.

The high-scoring encounter featured momentum swings, intense physical play, quick transitions, and technical moments, setting the stage for a tense decider.

In Lusaka, Zambia seized the initiative early, with Patrick Banda opening the scoring in just the second minute to give the hosts a crucial lead. Ghana pushed for an equalizer to force extra time or overturn the aggregate, but struggled to break through against a disciplined Zambian defense.

Musa Chiwaya then sealed the victory with a second-half goal in the 24th minute, allowing Zambia to manage the game effectively and hold firm until the final whistle.

Zambia’s triumph secures their place in the 2026 Futsal AFCON, joining hosts Morocco (three-time defending champions) and five other qualified nations as one of the seven teams advancing from the two-round qualification process involving 18 countries. This marks back-to-back appearances for Zambia at the tournament, highlighting their growing strength in African futsal.

Ghana’s coach, Phillip Boakye, acknowledged post-match that Zambia were the better side on the day and deserved the win. Despite the disappointment, the Black Stallions demonstrated competitive spirit, particularly in the thrilling home draw, and can draw lessons from the campaign as they aim to strengthen their program for future continental and international challenges.

The tournament also doubles as Africa’s pathway to the FIFA Futsal World Cup, making the elimination a significant setback for Ghana’s aspirations. Supporters and the Ghana Football Association will reflect on the narrow margins, but the focus now shifts to rebuilding and preparing for the next cycle.
