The Minister for Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson has once again emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the stability of the Ghanaian Cedi. He made a public appeal to all citizens to actively support national efforts aimed at safeguarding the value of the currency, especially during these crucial times. His remarks came during the celebration of the Cedi@60 anniversary, held on Tuesday, October 28, at the Accra International Conference Centre, marking six decades of the Ghana Cedi as the nation’s official currency.
In his keynote address, Dr. Forson described the 60-year milestone as a “new dawn” for Ghana, symbolizing a renewed spirit of economic sovereignty and resilience. He reiterated that the Ghana Cedi remains the only legal tender in the country, stressing that the U.S. dollar is not our currency and should not be used as a standard for pricing goods and services. The continued reliance on dollars, he warned, could hinder Ghana’s economic progress.
“Our currency is the Cedi,” Dr. Forson asserted passionately. “Let’s protect it, trade with it, and defend it with all our might. We must stop pricing our goods and services in foreign currencies, especially the US dollar. Doing so only hurts us. The Cedi is our identity; it represents our economic independence and sovereignty. Let us talk about the Cedi with pride, not as a burden, but as a badge of our national resilience.”
He called on Ghanaians to view the currency not merely as a medium of exchange but as a symbol of the nation’s hard-fought sovereignty. “As we reflect on 60 years of the Ghana Cedi, let us re-dedicate ourselves to the collective task of building the Ghana we envision—a nation resilient, self-reliant, and economically independent.”
Dr. Forson also urged citizens to embrace the celebrations as an opportunity to renew their commitment to the country’s economic growth and stability. “This is a time for us to rally behind our currency, to ensure it remains strong and respected. We owe it to ourselves and future generations. Let us protect the Cedi, uphold it, and ensure it thrives as a symbol of our national pride.”
As the nation celebrates this significant milestone, the Minister’s message underscores the importance of unity and resolve in safeguarding Ghana’s economic future. The call to action is clear: Ghana’s sovereignty is embodied in its currency, and it is a shared responsibility to defend and promote the Cedi at all costs.
