Ghana Black Starlets Drawn in Group D of the U-17 AFCON

The Ghana Black Starlets, the national under-17 football team, have been placed in Group D for the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations following the official draw conducted at the Confederation of African Football headquarters in Cairo on April 8, 2026.

2026 U-17 AFCON Draw

This group is widely regarded as one of the toughest in the tournament, pitting the young Ghanaians against strong continental sides including Senegal, the defending 2023 champions, South Africa, and Algeria.

The competition is scheduled to take place in Morocco from May 13 to June 2, 2026, with the top teams from each group advancing to the knockout stages and securing qualification spots for the subsequent FIFA U-17 World Cup.

Ghana’s Black Starlets earned their berth in the expanded 16-team tournament through impressive performances in the WAFU Zone B qualifiers, where they demonstrated solid form and attacking prowess.

However, the draw presents a significant challenge, as Senegal brings recent championship pedigree and flair, South Africa offers physicality and competitiveness, and Algeria adds tactical discipline and resilience. Many analysts have described Group D as a gauntlet that will test Ghana’s depth, preparation, and ability to perform under pressure.

Despite the difficulty, the Black Starlets enter the tournament with high expectations, building on Ghana’s rich history in youth football, including past successes at the U-17 level. The team has been intensifying residential camping and training sessions in recent months to fine-tune their strategy and squad cohesion. Fans and stakeholders will be watching closely to see how the young talents respond to these formidable opponents, with the ultimate goal of progressing far enough to book a return ticket to the global stage at the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
