The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has renewed its determination to restore peace and stability in Bawku, a town plagued by escalating violence and insecurity. This comes after a series of attacks, including those targeting security personnel deployed to the area, prompted strong condemnation from military leadership.
In a recent working visit to the conflict zone, the Chief of Army Staff, Major General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu, issued a decisive warning to those fueling unrest. “The Ghana Armed Forces will leave no stone unturned in pursuing armed elements destabilizing Bawku,” he declared.
A Worsening Crisis
Over recent months, violence in Bawku has intensified, spilling into nearby areas and resulting in indiscriminate killings and growing fear among residents. The GAF described the attacks as “cowardly” and vowed to deploy all available resources to neutralize the perpetrators.
Major General Gbetanu emphasized that any aggression toward civilians or security forces would be classified as acts of extremism and met with swift and resolute military action.
Tactical Response and Collaboration
To address the situation, the GAF, in collaboration with other security agencies, has intensified operations in Bawku. Measures include enforcing curfews, conducting routine and special patrols, safeguarding strategic installations, and carrying out targeted operations. These efforts have already yielded results, including arrests and the seizure of illegal weapons and ammunition.
While the military maintains its robust response, Major General Gbetanu acknowledged the complexity of the underlying issues fueling the conflict. “The challenges in Bawku are deep-rooted, but violence is not the solution,” he stated. “We are actively engaging community leaders to foster dialogue, reconciliation, and mutual respect as the only sustainable path to peace.”
A Warning to Instigators
In a stern message to individuals inciting violence, the Army Chief declared their actions intolerable. “Your days are numbered,” he warned. “We will not relent in creating an environment where peace and security prevail. Those who seek to destabilize Bawku must understand that the future does not lie in bloodshed but in unity, growth, and progress.”
Recognizing Valour and Commitment
Major General Gbetanu also lauded the bravery and professionalism of the security personnel operating in Bawku under strenuous conditions. He assured them of the GAF’s unwavering support, including the provision of additional logistical resources to enhance their peacekeeping mission.
He concluded with an appeal to the people of Bawku: “The future belongs to builders, not destroyers. Choose peace over conflict and unity over division. Together, we can create a community where every citizen thrives in safety and harmony.”
The GAF’s intensified commitment signals a firm resolve to restore calm in Bawku, reinforcing the nation’s broader efforts to promote peace and security across its borders.
