The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has urged the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to strengthen its grassroots structures and avoid complacency ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking on Ahotor 92.3FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme, hosted by Solomon Asiedu, Mr. Koomson said political parties could not rely solely on being in government to secure electoral victory. He stressed that sustained engagement with party supporters and effective grassroots organisation remain essential to winning elections.
Mr. Koomson also criticised what he described as attempts by the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to treat state assets as private property, citing the controversy surrounding the Achimota Forest as an example.
According to him, public resources belong to all Ghanaians and must be protected in the national interest. He said any attempt to claim ownership of state assets reflects a worrying attitude towards the management of national resources.
The GFL Secretary General further advised the NDC leadership to prioritise regular engagement with its supporters at the grassroots level rather than relying mainly on political office and government structures.
Drawing from his experience as a labour leader, Mr. Koomson said he consistently visited workers in their homes, including during weekends, to interact with them directly.
He said the approach enabled him to maintain a strong connection with the people and contributed to his success in every election he contested over a 12-year period.
Mr. Koomson cautioned that some political appointees appeared more focused on their personal ambitions ahead of the 2028 elections than on strengthening the party’s support base.
He stressed that even the most popular policies would not automatically guarantee electoral success if a party failed to maintain effective structures and continuous engagement with its grassroots supporters.
