The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to ensure transparency, consistency, and fairness in resolving disputes surrounding the declaration of parliamentary results in nine constituencies.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show with host Nana Dogbe, Mr. Koomson emphasized the importance of the EC maintaining its credibility by adhering to established principles and applying rules uniformly in all cases.
He warned against altering procedures to suit specific circumstances, as such actions could undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Mr. Koomson drew attention to precedents from the 2020 elections, highlighting the EC’s handling of contentious declarations.
He cited the case of Techiman South, where results were announced amid chaos and under heavy armed protection. Despite widespread calls for a re-collation, the EC insisted that declared results could only be contested in court.
“The EC maintained in 2020 that once a declaration is made, any grievances must be addressed through the judicial system. The same standard must apply now,” Mr. Koomson asserted.
He stressed that resolving disputes through judicial processes, rather than unilateral actions by the EC, is vital to preserving the integrity of Ghana’s democracy.
He urged the Commission to promptly address the current disputes to bring clarity and closure to the election outcomes.
“The EC must act promptly, fairly, and consistently to ensure justice is served,” he said. “Transparency in this process will help restore public trust and confidence in the Commission’s ability to manage elections.”
Mr. Koomson also called on EC Chairperson Jean Mensa to act decisively and responsibly in addressing the concerns.
“The EC Chair needs to be advised to do the needful and ensure fairness prevails,” he added.
His comments come amidst heightened tension over disputed parliamentary results, with stakeholders urging the EC to demonstrate impartiality and resolve the issues in line with constitutional provisions.
