Tema, Ghana – The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo to resign, stating that the process for her removal is already in motion and cannot be stopped.
“If she were my sister or mother, I would advise her to resign because nothing can truncate the process to remove her. You can go to court, you can go wherever, but it will not change,” Mr. Koomson said during an interview on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu Show with host Nana Dogbe.
Petitions Against the Chief Justice
President John Dramani Mahama has pledged to uphold due process in handling the three petitions submitted for the removal of the Chief Justice.
Two of these petitions were filed on February 14, 2025, with a third following on March 17, 2025.
In response to the petitions, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo formally requested copies on March 27, 2025, to enable her to respond and establish whether a prima facie case exists.
Abraham Koomson’s Advice to the Chief Justice
Mr. Koomson cautioned against engaging in a public back-and-forth over the matter, emphasizing that resignation would be a more dignified course of action.
“She shouldn’t be engaging in any banter because she can’t survive this situation through arguments. Resigning honorably will help her a lot,” he stated.
President Mahama’s Response
President Mahama, in adherence to constitutional procedures, has referred the petitions to the Council of State for advice and granted the Chief Justice 10 days to respond.
The outcome of this process will determine the next steps regarding her position.
