Tema, Ghana – Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has lamented the ongoing water crisis in the Tema enclave, describing it as unacceptable for a country marking 68 years of independence.
According to him, it is disheartening that after nearly seven decades of independence, Tema, Ghana’s industrial hub, is grappling with an irregular water supply.
“For months now, Tema has not had a regular flow of water through the taps. Celebrating Ghana at 68 while residents struggle for water is not what Dr. Kwame Nkrumah envisioned for this industrial city,” he stated.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show with sit-in host Citizen Kofi Owusu, Mr. Koomson called for urgent action to restore a consistent supply of potable water to Tema and its surrounding areas.
He further criticized the relevance of the Independence Day celebrations, arguing that Ghana appears to be celebrating “dependency” rather than true independence.
“In reality, we should cancel these celebrations because from 1957 till now, Ghana remains the same. What are we truly celebrating?” he questioned.
On cost-cutting measures introduced by President Mahama, which suspended regional Independence Day celebrations and moved the main event to the Jubilee House, Mr. Koomson expressed his approval.
“The celebration at the Jubilee House should continue for a while because the cost has been significantly reduced compared to what was spent under the past NPP administration. I am happy about that,” he noted.
Frustrated by the worsening water crisis, he hinted that residents of Tema, including himself, may have no option but to stage a protest to demand urgent intervention from the authorities.
