Tema, Ghana – Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), has urged Parliament to remove excessive taxes that burden industries, emphasizing that reviving factories and industries is a more sustainable way to generate revenue.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show with host Nana Dogbe, Mr. Koomson argued that without thriving industries, tax collection would dwindle.
“Reviving factories will create more jobs, leading to more tax revenue. But when industries collapse, there will be no taxes to collect,” he said.
He appealed to Parliament to ease the tax burden on industries when reviewing the national budget.
“I hear the proposed taxes will go before Parliament. I urge lawmakers not to introduce new taxes but to scrap nuisance taxes to relieve industries,” Abraham Koomson added.
While acknowledging the need for taxes to sustain the economy, he warned against overburdening industries, which could ultimately lead to their collapse.
“Some argue that without taxes, the government can’t generate revenue. But excessive taxation will cripple the very industries that sustain the economy,” he cautioned.
Abraham Koomson specifically called for the removal of the COVID Tax, Betting Tax, and certain excise duties, which he said were making life unbearable for workers.
“We plead with Parliament to scrap taxes like the COVID Tax, Betting Tax, and excessive excise duties. We understand taxes are necessary, but overtaxing industries will only lead to their downfall,” he stressed.
He further warned that if these burdensome taxes are not removed, rising unemployment could jeopardize President John Mahama’s reset agenda.
“If these companies collapse, unemployment will rise, and the consequences will be dire. We are pleading with authorities to act now to prevent potential demonstrations,” Mr. Koomson concluded.
