TEMA, Ghana, 1st June: The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Koomson, has raised concerns over the leadership style of the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, warning that it could have political consequences for both the party and the country.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s “Yepe Ahunu” programme, Mr. Koomson stated that the current approach of the NDC chairman is “not good for the party and the country as a whole,” adding that many workers are increasingly uneasy about developments within the political space.
He cautioned that such sentiments, if not addressed, could affect public confidence and potentially weaken the NDC’s electoral fortunes.
His comments come amid growing public discussion over alleged internal tensions within the NDC regarding succession politics and positioning ahead of future leadership contests, following the party’s 2024 election victory and President Mahama’s return to office.
Chairman Asiedu Nketiah has recently embarked on a “Thank You Tour” across the country, aimed at expressing appreciation to voters for their support. However, critics have suggested that aspects of the tour are being interpreted as early political positioning rather than purely appreciation-focused engagement.
A recent moment from the tour went viral after the NDC chairman suggested that certain strategic decisions, including changes in parliamentary leadership prior to the elections, contributed to the party’s victory.
This remark has sparked debate within political circles, with some arguing that credit should be shared collectively among party figures, including senior leaders such as Haruna Iddrisu.
Mr. Koomson acknowledged Asiedu Nketiah’s political experience and described him as a strong candidate in his own right, but maintained that his current approach risks undermining unity within the party and public trust in its leadership.
He further warned that if perceptions of selfishness or internal division grow within the NDC, voters could become disillusioned, potentially paving the way for a return of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), a situation he said would not be in the interest of workers.
He urged the party to remain focused on delivering on its mandate and avoid actions that could be interpreted as self-serving or divisive.
Mr. Koomson emphasized that his comments were a frank disagreement with the chairman’s current style and strategy, which he believes should be reconsidered in the broader interest of national stability and labour welfare.
