GFL Boss Laments Slow Adjustment of Prices Despite Cedi Gains

Tema, Ghana – The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has expressed concern over the slow response of prices of essential commodities to the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian Cedi against the US Dollar.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, May 31, 2025, Mr. Koomson noted that while the strengthening of the Cedi has led to a noticeable reduction in fuel prices, the same cannot be said for essential goods, whose prices remain stubbornly high.

“The enhanced strength of the Cedi is encouraging, and its impact on fuel prices is quite significant. However, the prices of essential commodities are taking too long to adjust, even as workers’ incomes remain stagnant eroding their purchasing power,” he stated.

Mr. Koomson emphasized that the failure of market prices to reflect the improved exchange rate undermines the economic relief expected by ordinary Ghanaians, especially members of the working class.

He urged the government to enforce price regulations more strictly, in line with the economic objectives of the NDC administration aimed at reducing the cost of living.

“Since the objective of the government’s financial and economic policy is to reduce the cost of living, stringent measures must be considered to ensure immediate compliance with price regulations,” he stressed.

The GFL Secretary General warned that if this issue persists, the working class the backbone of Ghana’s economy could be left behind in the NDC government’s Reset Agenda, which seeks to rebuild the economy and improve the quality of life for all citizens.

“If nothing is done to reduce the prices of essential commodities as the Cedi continues to appreciate, the working class will lose out on the government’s Reset Agenda,” Mr. Koomson cautioned.
