GFL Boss Condemns Tema Demolitions, Warns of Negative Impact on Government

Tema, Ghana, 6 December: Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has strongly criticized the recent demolition of homes, structures, and containers in Tema, describing the exercise as harmful to the image of the government.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu show on Saturday, December 6, Mr. Koomson said the demolitions carried out by the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) have raised serious concerns, especially because some of the affected structures reportedly had valid permit numbers issued by the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA).

“If you look at the structures they are demolishing, some have TMA permit numbers. So if TDC and TMA are not working together to approve locations for these containers, then what are they doing? They are only creating problems for the government because you can’t go around demolishing people’s structures,” he said.

Mr. Koomson lamented the sudden and unannounced nature of the demolitions, noting that many residents had invested significant resources into building their properties. He said the lack of consultation is worrying.

He urged TDC and TMA to harmonize their processes for issuing structural permits, insisting that the two institutions must present a united front since both act on behalf of the government.

“TDC and TMA need to come together and agree on how they will handle the issuance of permits. They both represent the government, so there must be coordination,” he stressed.

He further advised the authorities to redirect their attention from demolishing properties to fixing more pressing problems in the municipality.

“The authorities should shift their attention from demolishing properties to addressing issues like traffic lights that are not working,” he said.
