Speaking on the matter, Henry Asante Twum, the GFA’s Communications Director, confirmed that the association is fully funding the treatment, emphasizing that the injury occurred while the player was representing Ghana on international duty.

Francis Abu, a 23-year-old defensive midfielder currently on the books of French Ligue 1 side Toulouse FC, sustained a serious ankle fracture during Ghana’s opening match at the 2025 Kirin Cup against hosts Japan last Friday in Nagoya.

The incident took place in the latter stages of the encounter when Abu went down after a heavy challenge, immediately clutching his lower leg in severe pain.

Medical staff rushed onto the pitch, and the player was eventually carried off on a stretcher, visibly distraught as teammates and opponents looked on with concern.

He was promptly transferred to Toyota Memorial Hospital, one of the leading medical facilities in the region, where scans confirmed the extent of the damage.

Surgeons successfully performed the necessary operation to stabilize the fractured ankle, inserting plates and screws in a procedure that the hospital described as routine and without any complications. Abu is now reported to be in stable condition and has already begun the initial phases of post-operative care.

In an official statement released shortly after the surgery, the GFA reassured supporters that the player is receiving top-class medical attention and expressed gratitude to the Japanese medical team for their swift and professional response.

The association also reiterated its longstanding policy of fully supporting players who suffer injuries while on international duty, ensuring they face no personal financial burden during recovery.

This decisive action underscores the GFA’s ongoing commitment to the welfare and well-being of every member of the national team setup, sending a strong message that players can represent the country without fear of the potential consequences of serious injury.

The GFA medical team remains in close contact with both Toulouse FC’s medical staff and the specialists in Japan to coordinate the next stages of rehabilitation.

Abu begins recovery program

While an exact timeline for Abu’s return to the pitch has not yet been confirmed, the association has pledged to provide regular updates as he progresses along the road back to full fitness.

Everyone within Ghanaian football now rallies behind the talented midfielder, hopeful that he will overcome this setback and return stronger to continue contributing to both club and country in the months ahead.
