GFA Seeks GHC20 Million in Damages, Retraction, and Apology in Defamation Suit
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has filed a lawsuit against journalist Muftawu Nabila Abdulai and Multimedia Group Limited, seeking GHC20 million in damages, a full retraction, and a public apology for allegedly defamatory reports.
The lawsuit stems from publications and broadcasts on (link unavailable), Joy News, and Joy FM on March 4, 2025, regarding the GFA’s procurement of buses for Division One League Clubs.
Allegations and Demands
The reports alleged that the GFA awarded a GH₵5.1 million contract to Freightgistics Ghana Company Ltd through sole sourcing, using FIFA Forward money, and further alleged procurement breaches and alteration of Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) to deceive revenue authorities. The GFA argues that these reports were misleading and defamatory, damaging its reputation and credibility.
Relief Sought
The GFA is seeking the following reliefs:
1. *GHC 20 Million in General Damages*: Compensation for reputational harm and damage to credibility among stakeholders, sponsors, and governing bodies.
2. *A Full Public Retraction*: Withdrawal of defamatory statements with the same prominence as the original reports.
A formal apology to be broadcast on Joy FM and Joy News Television, published on (link unavailable), and shared on social media platforms.
4. *A Perpetual Injunction*: Restraint from making further defamatory statements about the GFA.
5. *Exemplary Damages*: Compensation for reckless and malicious reporting.
6. *Legal Costs and Expenses*: Reimbursement for all legal fees and costs incurred in pursuing the lawsuit.
Multimedia Group and Muftawu Nabila have yet to publicly respond to the lawsuit. The case is ongoing, with the GFA seeking to protect its reputation and credibility.
