GFA President Defends Referees Amid Growing Officiating Controversies in the GPL

Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku has urged calm in the wake of rising complaints over poor officiating in the Ghana Premier League, insisting that the country still boasts competent referees despite recent controversies.

Speaking on Tuesday, 25th November 2025, Okraku acknowledged the increasing number of officiating errors that have sparked frustration among clubs and supporters. In recent weeks, nearly every matchday has been overshadowed by protests from either the home or away team, and in some cases, both, over decisions deemed unfair or questionable.

While conceding that some mistakes are unavoidable, the GFA President maintained that the integrity and overall quality of Ghanaian referees should not be dismissed because of a few high-profile errors.

“We still have good referees despite recent errors,” he stressed, adding that the Association remains committed to improving officiating standards through training, monitoring, and accountability.

Refereeing has become one of the most contentious topics of the ongoing Premier League season, with several clubs calling for reforms, enhanced VAR support, or stricter sanctions for repeated errors. The GFA, however, believes the current discourse should encourage constructive solutions rather than blanket criticism.

Okraku assured stakeholders that the Association will continue to review performances and apply the necessary corrective measures to safeguard the credibility of the league.

As the season progresses, fans and club officials will hope for more consistency from match officials to ensure that results are decided on the pitch, rather than by contentious calls.
