GES Postpones Reopening Date for Single-Track SHSs to April 23, 2025
The Ghana Education Service (GES) has revised the reopening date for single-track Senior High Schools (SHSs), extending it from March 29, 2025, to April 23, 2025. This adjustment aims to accommodate public holidays and maintain a seamless academic schedule.
In a circular dated March 27, 2025, the GES directed all regional education directors to communicate the change to school heads, parents, guardians, and students. The circular, signed by Prince C. Agyeman-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, on behalf of the Acting Director-General, emphasized the need for stakeholders to take note and adjust their plans accordingly.
The initial reopening date of March 29 was reconsidered due to the Eid-Ul-Fitr celebrations falling on Sunday, March 30. The Ministry of the Interior, through an Executive Instrument (E.I.) issued by the President, declared Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, as public holidays to observe the festival. The GES further assessed the calendar and decided to postpone the reopening to April 23 to avoid potential disruptions and ensure the academic schedule aligns effectively.
Cassandra Twum-Ampofo, Head of the GES Public Relations Unit, explained the rationale behind the extension.
“Reopening schools just before multiple holidays would have caused unnecessary interruptions and posed travel risks for students. With the upcoming Easter holidays following closely, it was prudent to reschedule to a more stable period,” she stated.
The GES has assured students and parents that the delay will not negatively affect the academic progress of final-year students preparing for the 2025 WASSCE. Additional instructional hours will be introduced to make up for the lost time, ensuring adequate preparation for the examination.
The new reopening date applies exclusively to single-track SHSs. Double-track schools will continue to follow their existing academic calendar without changes.
This adjustment reflects GES’s commitment to fostering a safe, efficient, and uninterrupted learning environment for students across the country.
