Former Germany international footballer Gerald Asamoah has been decorated with the Federal Cross of Merit, a prestigious honour that recognizes his outstanding humanitarian work and contributions to strengthening ties between Germany and Ghana.
The 47-year-old was presented with the award by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Accra, where Steinmeier is currently on an official visit.
Asamoah’s Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Disease, established in 2007, has been instrumental in supporting children suffering from heart defects, with a strong focus on Ghana.
The foundation regularly sends German medical personnel to Ghana to perform operations and save children’s lives. President Steinmeier praised Asamoah’s selfless service, describing him as a “bridge builder between Ghana and Germany.”
Asamoah’s commitment to social causes extends beyond his foundation. He has also been an ambassador for the “School Without Racism” project, promoting inclusion and combating racism. Steinmeier commended Asamoah’s efforts, saying, “That’s something you can wear day and night now,” as he presented the award.
Asamoah was visibly moved by the honour, expressing his gratitude and surprise. “That I’m receiving something like this, I still can’t believe it. But it’s pure joy,” he said, after accidentally dropping his award certificate. “It’s simply pride that the work I do is paying off.” The award serves as motivation for Asamoah to continue his mission, saying, “When God blesses someone, you have to try to give something back.”
The Federal Cross of Merit is a testament to Asamoah’s enduring commitment to humanitarian causes and his lasting legacy as both a footballer and philanthropist. As a former player for Hannover 96 and FC Schalke 04, and part of the Germany squad that finished runners-up at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Asamoah has made a lasting impact on and off the pitch.
