George Afriyie Calls for Autonomous Ghana Premier League

Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie is pushing for an independent body to manage the Ghana Premier League, citing concerns over poor officiating and betting allegations.

He believes government investment in the league demands a professional and transparent management structure.

Afriyie suggests detaching the league from the GFA secretariat, with the autonomous body reporting directly to GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo.

This call follows a 2019 promise by GFA President Kurt Okraku to make the Premier League autonomous, with recommendations from a Togbe Afede XIV-led committee awaiting implementation.

The GFA is working to raise the Ghana Premier League’s global standards, examining areas like competition standards, visibility, and player welfare.
