KWASO, Ghana, 14th September: President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to confer a national honour on the Engineer Regiments of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) for successfully clearing 175.6 kilometres of the right-of-way for the proposed Accra-Kumasi Expressway.
President Mahama made the announcement at Kwaso in the Ashanti Region during a ceremony to officially receive the handover report on the right-of-way clearance undertaken by the Ghana Armed Forces.
According to the President, the military was given 20 weeks to complete the assignment after being tasked by his administration on April 22, 2026.
He said the Engineer Regiments completed the task in 19 weeks, one week ahead of schedule.
“From Ablekuma in Greater Accra to Sewua in Ashanti Region, within 19 weeks, 175.6 kilometres of road passing through virgin forests, crossing rivers and streams, Ghana Armed Forces can today announce to all of us, as they say in military jargon, mission accomplished,” President Mahama said.
He commended the Ghana Armed Forces, particularly the Engineer Regiments, for what he described as a significant contribution to the preparatory works for the major road project.
President Mahama disclosed that he had directed that the Engineer Regiments be honoured at the next National Honours ceremony, which will be held to mark Ghana’s 70th anniversary of independence.
He said the engineers would receive the Order of the Companion of the Volta in recognition of their work.
The President also directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to incorporate the Engineer Regiments as a major subcontractor to the main contractor when construction of the Accra-Kumasi Expressway begins.
He further tasked the Armed Forces with participating in the installation of steel bridges across the country.
President Mahama said the military’s demonstrated capacity in engineering and infrastructure works justified greater involvement in civilian development projects.
He recalled the role played by the Ghana Armed Forces during the PNDC era in opening up the Afram Plains and constructing the road to Donkorkrom.
“Ghana Armed Forces are capable and I have absolute trust in their ability to help this country in its infrastructure development,” he said.
The President said the government would increasingly involve the Armed Forces in areas including road construction, building projects, agriculture and other development activities.
