From the Lecture Halls of Legon to the Moon: President Mahama Celebrates Christina Koch

President John Dramani Mahama has joined the University of Ghana and the entire nation in celebrating NASA astronaut Christina Koch following her historic role in the Artemis II mission.

The President described it as a moment of immense national pride, noting that Christina Koch, the only woman on the pioneering lunar mission once studied as an exchange student at the University of Ghana during the 1999/2000 academic year.

He emphasized that her time at Legon went far beyond academics, as she fully embraced Ghanaian culture and heritage. By studying courses such as the History of Ghana, the History of Africa, Rural Sociology, Music, and even Twi for Beginners, she developed a strong foundation of global citizenship right in Accra.

In a Facebook post, President Mahama reflected on a symbolic moment that resonated deeply with Ghanaians across the country.

“Her gesture of hoisting the Ghanaian flag in outer space was a deeply touching moment for every Ghanaian. It is a testament to the fact that no matter how far one travels, even into the vastness of space, the friendships made and the lessons learned stay with you”

He further highlighted the inspirational power of her journey, describing it as a shining example for young people across Ghana and beyond:

“Christina’s journey from the classrooms of the University of Ghana to the frontiers of space exploration serves as a powerful inspiration to every young Ghanaian. It reminds us that our educational institutions continue to produce and shape global leaders who break barriers and reach for the stars”

President Mahama also extended his best wishes to Koch and her fellow crew members as they continue their historic mission.

“On behalf of a proud nation, I wish Christina Koch and the entire Artemis II crew godspeed on your return journey to earth. May your success continue to inspire generations across Ghana, Africa, and the world to believe that there’s no height that is insurmountable. Congratulations, Christina.

Ghana is proud of you!”
