Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana -Legon, Emeritus Professor Ivan Addai – Mensah has indicated that, the free senior high school policy introduced by the NPP administration is a good policy, but we still need to review.
He said, if he wouldn’t have had somebody at his time who was willing to pay his school fees, maybe he would have landed into something else.
But the fact is, we are in a society where we have people who can actually pay for their wards. He said previously in the old system, there was not only academic performance that can get you scholarship, but they also look at your economic stations.
According to him, the problem with the current free SHS policy is adding the boarding factor to the tuition factor which has made it very difficult to provide for the actual academic work and concentrated on the feeding aspect.
Speaking to the media on the policy, the Ghanaian chemist said he is very worried when it comes to the said policy because people are ready to pay but the government has failed to listen to advice.
