Four Suspected Armed Robbers Killed in Shootout with Police on Bekwai-Fomena Highway

Four suspected armed robbers were killed in a shootout with the Ghana Police Service on the Bekwai-Fomena highway in the Ashanti Region. The incident occurred on April 14, 2025, after the robbers set up a barricade to stop commuters on the Bekwai-Fomena Adansi stretch, an area plagued by highway robberies.

According to the police report, a fierce gun battle ensued when the robbers encountered law enforcement, resulting in the deaths of four suspected gunmen. Two others are currently on the run. Investigations suggest that these individuals were responsible for a string of attacks on traders and commuters in the Bekwai and Fomena areas.

The police recovered a significant cache of weapons from the crime scene, including:
– Local Pistol: A homemade firearm believed to have been used in their operations
– AK47 Rifle: An Avtomat Kalashnikova, commonly known as an AK47, was seized
– Ammunition: Various rounds of ammunition were confiscated
– Motorbikes: Several motorbikes, likely used for their crimes, were recovered
– Other Confiscated Weapons: Additional arms believed to have been used during their operations were taken into custody

This incident highlights the ongoing efforts of the Ghana Police Service to combat highway robberies in the region. Unfortunately, such crimes are not new to the area. In July 2024, a commercial driver was shot dead by suspected armed robbers on the Ahenkro-Kwaman highway in the same region. The police continue to crack down on these criminal activities, ensuring the safety of commuters and traders.
