A devastating outbreak of violence ravaged the Nanik and Nganme Gberuk communities in the Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo district of the North East Region on Friday, February 28, leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake. The brutal attacks, sparked by a long-standing chieftaincy dispute, claimed the lives of four innocent individuals and left six others with gunshot wounds.
As the assailants launched their assault on the communities, they razed several houses to the ground, leaving countless residents without shelter. One of the victims, a Mamprusi teacher residing in the Nanik community, met a horrific demise when his room was set ablaze while he slept. Trapped and unable to escape, he succumbed to the inferno, his body burned beyond recognition.
The gruesome images of his charred remains circulated on social media, fueling speculation about a possible connection to the simmering Mamprusi-Bimoba conflict in the Bawku area. However, the victim’s family has vehemently dismissed these claims, emphasizing that his death was an unfortunate accident and that he was simply an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire.
In an emotional interview with Channel One News, a family member of the deceased paid tribute to his brother, describing the profound impact of his loss on the community. He also urged workers in the area to exercise extreme caution and advised them to temporarily relocate until peace is restored. The victim was laid to rest in the community, his tragic demise serving as a poignant reminder of the devastating consequences of conflict and violence.
