There is an urgent call for the Electoral Commission to exhibit fairness, confidence, and transparency while ensuring inclusivity with all stakeholders. This move is crucial in alleviating the tension and uncertainty surrounding potential violence and conflict during elections.
Highlighting the significance of the electoral process, former Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, emphasized the need for credible voter registration to uphold the integrity of elections. Speaking to the media in Accra, he stressed the importance of the Electoral Commission (EC) being adequately prepared to establish robust structures, warning against actions that could undermine the legislative instruments governing elections.
Ofosu-Ampofo urged political parties to adhere to electoral laws and foster a culture of respect for the electoral process. Drawing from his seventeen years of experience in electoral matters, he emphasized the critical role of teamwork and inclusivity in creating a peaceful environment conducive to transparent elections.
Calling for reforms to enhance the electoral system’s credibility, Ofosu-Ampofo debunked the notion that the Electoral Commission cannot manipulate election outcomes. He cited instances such as the disenfranchisement of voters in SALL during the 2016 presidential election as evidence of the EC’s discretionary power.
Looking ahead, he expressed confidence in the readiness of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the upcoming elections, highlighting the party’s unity and commitment to winning power. As the NDC gears up for its campaign, Ofosu-Ampofo emphasized the importance of aligning activities with the party’s manifesto.
Reflecting on his role within the party, Ofosu-Ampofo underscored his wealth of experience gained from serving in various capacities as a minister and party official. He also praised the humility of the NDC’s flag-bearer, former President John Mahama, noting his trustworthiness and dedication to the country’s development.
Advocating for a shift towards a 24-hour economy policy championed by Mahama, Ofosu-Ampofo urged the government to embrace the initiative for its potential to stimulate economic growth and address unemployment challenges. He emphasized the urgent need to tackle youth unemployment and restore hope among the disillusioned youth seeking employment opportunities.
