Former Member of Parliament for the Buem Constituency, Daniel Kwasi Ashiamah, has expressed shock at the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) public outcry over the LGBTQ+ issue, describing their reaction as either deliberate misinformation or a lack of understanding of parliamentary procedures.
According to him, the NPP has itself caused a constitutional crisis regarding the LGBTQ+ matter, yet its members are now “making unnecessary noise” instead of taking responsibility.
Mr. Ashiamah argued that the NPP, particularly its Members of Parliament, are fully aware that the earlier version of the LGBTQ+ bill expired with the dissolution of the 8th Parliament. He explained that the bill lapsed because then-President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo failed to sign it into law before the end of his term.
“The NPP created this problem,” he stated. “They should stop the noise and work with the NDC to properly reintroduce the bill, because it is a process that must follow parliamentary procedure.”
He further criticized the NPP for what he called hypocrisy, insisting that the party had the opportunity to sign the bill into law during its administration but failed to do so.
“If they had the political will and understanding, they would have sign the bill into law when they were in power. So they should just keep quiet and let’s do things the right way,” Mr. Ashiamah added.
