ACCRA, Ghana, 8th September: President John Dramani Mahama has described football as a powerful branding instrument that can help promote Ghana’s image and identity across the world.
According to him, football enjoys a massive global following, making it one of the most effective platforms through which countries can project their identity and culture internationally.
Speaking when Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies Football Club, Ghana’s representatives in continental competitions, paid a courtesy call on him, President Mahama said Ghana’s football heritage often makes the country instantly recognisable abroad.
He recalled instances where people in other countries identified him as a Ghanaian and immediately mentioned famous Ghanaian football personalities and clubs, including Asante Kotoko, Hearts of Oak and the legendary Abedi Pele.
“Football is a very good branding instrument for any country,” he said, stressing that the sport could significantly contribute to Ghana’s international image.
President Mahama commended Medeama SC, Nations FC and Ampem Darkoa Ladies for winning various championships in Ghana and qualifying to represent the country on the continent.
He particularly urged the teams to remain determined despite facing formidable opponents, citing TP Mazembe as one of the major challenges ahead.
President Mahama said strong performances by Ghanaian clubs on the continent would not only bring trophies but also enhance the country’s reputation and visibility in international football.
He therefore encouraged the teams to give their best and make Ghana proud in their continental competitions.
