TEMA, Ghana, 30th May: Abraham Koomson, Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), has called on leaders of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to concentrate on fulfilling the promises they made to Ghanaians ahead of the 2024 general elections rather than engaging in premature succession campaigns.
According to him, the priority of the party’s leadership should be supporting the government to successfully implement its manifesto commitments and improve the living conditions of Ghanaians, instead of engaging in power struggles over who will lead the party in the future.
Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday 30th May, Mr. Koomson expressed concern over reports of internal campaigning and jockeying for political positions barely a year after the NDC assumed office.
He argued that it is inappropriate for members of a governing party to focus on personal political ambitions when several key campaign promises have yet to be fully delivered.
“The government is yet to fully implement the 24-Hour Economy Policy, unemployment remains a major challenge, some teachers are still awaiting the payment of their arrears, and no major convictions or recoveries have been secured under the Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) initiative. These were major promises made to Ghanaians, and they deserve the government’s full attention,” he stated.
Mr. Koomson urged the Council of Elders of the NDC to take immediate steps to address any internal divisions and misunderstandings that could undermine the party’s unity and the government’s effectiveness.
While commending the National Chairman for his dedication and hard work towards the growth of the party, he stressed that political victories alone are not enough.
He noted that Ghanaians voted for the NDC based on its promises and now expect tangible results.
“Changing governments is not merely about changing faces or occupying positions. The people of Ghana expect solutions to their problems and improvements in their daily lives,” he said.
Mr. Koomson further warned that many workers are closely monitoring developments within the government and the ruling party. He cautioned that if the government fails to meet expectations, the consequences would extend beyond the NDC and negatively affect the country as a whole.
“The failure of the NDC government will ultimately become a failure for Ghana because many citizens have placed their hopes and trust in this administration,” he added.
The GFL Secretary General therefore called on all NDC members and government officials with presidential ambitions to temporarily set aside their personal interests and focus on helping President John Dramani Mahama deliver on key flagship policies and programmes.
He specifically mentioned the full implementation of the 24-Hour Economy Policy, the establishment of the Women’s Development Bank, the payment of outstanding labour arrears, and other major commitments made to Ghanaians.
Mr. Koomson concluded by urging anyone engaged in early presidential campaigning to refrain from such activities and instead channel their energy into supporting the government’s development agenda and ensuring that the promises made to the electorate are fulfilled.
