TEMA, Ghana, 4th July: The Secretary General of the Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL), Abraham Koomson, has called on the government to adequately retool the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) with modern firefighting and rescue equipment to improve its operational efficiency.

According to him, the Fire Service can only respond effectively to emergencies if it is equipped with the latest technologies and resources used in modern firefighting and rescue operations.

Speaking on Ahotor FM’s Yepe Ahunu programme on Saturday, July 4, Abraham Koomson noted that significant advancements have been made globally in firefighting and emergency response, stressing that Ghana must invest in such technologies to strengthen the country’s disaster preparedness.

His comments follow the devastating floods triggered by heavy rains on June 29, which swept through several communities in the Greater Accra Region and other parts of the country. The floods claimed lives, displaced thousands of residents, and caused extensive damage to homes, businesses, and public infrastructure.

Reacting to the disaster, Mr. Koomson said he watched a video showing personnel of the Ghana National Fire Service struggling to access the scene of a fire outbreak that occurred during the flooding.

He described the situation as worrying and argued that it underscored the urgent need to modernise the Fire Service.

Abraham Koomson therefore appealed to the government to invest in state-of-the-art firefighting vehicles, rescue equipment, and other modern technologies to enable the Ghana National Fire Service to respond more effectively to emergencies and save lives and property.
