Fisherman – first Ghanaian film to make it to Venice International Film Festival

Ghanaian cinema has reached a significant milestone with the debut of The Fisherman, produced by Kofi Owusu-Afriyie of Luu Vision Media, at the esteemed 81st La Biennale Venice Film Festival.

This film, scripted and directed by Zoey Martinson, is Ghana’s first official selection in this celebrated festival, premiering to a sold-out crowd and receiving a warm standing ovation. Although it screened out of competition, The Fisherman garnered substantial praise, earning the prestigious Fellini Medal, presented by UNESCO’s Enrico Fulchignoni Prize.

Now in its 36th year, this award is one of the most significant recognitions from ICFT-UNESCO, honoring films that exemplify the values of peace and tolerance. Martinson’s story, deeply inspired by her life in Keta, vividly portrays a Ghanaian narrative that encapsulates themes of resilience, community, and the coastal traditions integral to Ghana’s heritage.

The film, shot entirely in Ghana, features a talented cast including Ricky Adeleyitar, Endurance Grand, William Lamptey, Kiki Romi, and Nigeria’s Dulo Harris, along with Fred Amugi, Roselyn Ngissah, Dorothy Konadu, Mynna Otoo, Adjeezay, Adwoa Akoto, Princess Fathia Nkrumah, Papa Osei, Andrew Adote, and Shadrack Agyare.

On top of its profound storyline, The Fisherman excels in artistic presentation, showcasing stunning cinematography by Adam Carboni, costume design by Gifty Mawuena Sossavi, and production design by Douglas Baiden. The film’s editing was expertly handled by Jasmin Way, while Avi Amon crafted its evocative score. Notable visual effects were curated by Nurudeen Tahiru and Daria Amai Shelton, with casting directed by Mawuko Kuadzi. “The Venice premiere was an extraordinary experience,” said producer Kofi Owusu-Afriyie.

“To witness this story, resonate with individuals from varied backgrounds is a significant achievement for Ghanaian cinema and the broader African film community.” Produced by Luu Vision Media, alongside King Luu and Korey Jackson, The Fisherman is currently in search of distribution.
