Finance Minister-Designate Dr. Ato Forson Reaffirms Commitment to Free SHS Policy.

Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has assured Ghanaians of the unwavering commitment of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to sustain the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy. Speaking before the Appointments Committee of Parliament on Monday, January 13, Dr. Forson made it clear that the policy remains a cornerstone of the country’s educational agenda under his party’s leadership.

Dr. Forson emphasized that the Free SHS programme is a non-negotiable priority, citing the unambiguous position of former President John Dramani Mahama, leader of the NDC. “My party’s stance on Free SHS has been clearly articulated by President Mahama. He has given his assurance to the people of Ghana that the policy will remain intact. I am only a servant of this great vision. Who am I to suggest otherwise?” he remarked.

Acknowledging the transformative impact of the Free SHS policy on the lives of Ghanaian students, Dr. Forson described it as a national asset that must be preserved and enhanced. “Free SHS is a monumental achievement for Ghana. It is not just an initiative; it is a legacy. It has come to stay,” he declared, underscoring the government’s resolve to prioritize education as a key driver of national development.

Dr. Forson’s statements come amidst ongoing discussions on education reform, public expenditure, and the need to balance fiscal responsibility with investments in human capital. He assured the Committee and Ghanaians at large that the government would continue to refine and improve the policy to ensure its sustainability and effectiveness.

As the nominee for the critical Finance Ministry portfolio, Dr. Forson’s reassurance has been welcomed by stakeholders, signaling continuity and stability in one of the country’s most transformative social policies.
