FDA Seizes Unregistered Drugs in Eastern Region, Cracks Down on Unlicensed Pharmaceuticals

The Eastern Regional Head of the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), Anita Owusu-Kuffour, and her team conducted a sweep of Community Information Centres, seizing unregistered drugs for proper disposal at the Akwadum dumping site. This exercise aimed to deter other manufacturers from selling unlicensed products.

The operation, which started at 05:20 hours, covered various areas in the New Juaben North and South Municipalities, including Koforidua-Effiduase, Asokore, and Zongo. During the sweep, Owusu-Kuffour and her team discovered drugs with unsubstantiated claims of curing heart diseases, stroke, diabetes, and other ailments.

This effort aligns with the FDA’s objectives to protect public health by ensuring human safety and efficacy of veterinary drugs, biological products, and medical devices. The FDA has been actively cracking down on unlicensed pharmaceuticals, as seen in a similar operation in Kumasi, where they confiscated unregistered herbal and orthodox medicinal products worth GH¢700,000.

Owusu-Kuffour’s actions demonstrate the FDA’s commitment to safeguarding public health and promoting accountability among manufacturers and sellers of pharmaceutical products.
