The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has issued a grave warning regarding the packaging of a product labeled as “galamsey water,” associated with illegal mining activities in the country. The FDA asserts that the sale of such contaminated water not only endangers public health and safety but also presents significant risks to the community at large.
It is crucial to note that manufacturing facilities licensed to produce sachet water are legally prohibited from using their operations for any other products. Such violations contravene the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851), thereby jeopardizing consumer safety.
In response to this pressing issue, the FDA is actively collaborating with law enforcement agencies to identify and apprehend individuals involved in these unlawful activities. The authority warns that those engaged in the packaging and distribution of “galamsey water” or any other unsafe water will face stringent legal consequences.
The FDA urges the public to refrain from engaging in or supporting the distribution of water sourced from illegal and unsafe practices. Any reports concerning such activities should be directed to the FDA for prompt investigation and action.
The FDA remains steadfast in its commitment to safeguarding public health and will continue to monitor and enforce compliance to ensure the well-being of all Ghanaians.
