The Chief Executive Officer of the Food and Drugs Authority, Delese Mimi Darko, is cautioning against the production of sub-standard cosmetics and household chemicals which she said, could have dire consequences on the users as well as the image of the country.
She reiterated the mandate of the FDA as the national regulating authority by the Public Health Act 2012, Act 851 that mandates the FDA to ensure public health and safety through the regulation of pharmaceuticals, biologics, herbals, food products, chemicals medical devices, house hold chemicals, tobacco and tobacco products.
She was addressing a 3-day programme organized by the Food and Drugs Authority with support of the Ghana Enterprises Agency, for 34 companies in Accra.
The forum is aimed at deepening the knowledge of the participants to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
In a speech read on her behalf, Deputy Chief Executive of FDA, Mrs Akua Amartey noted that, the Authority over the years has instituted several activities including the inspection and licensing of manufacturing facilities, registration of products, market surveillance, as well as, ensuring industrial support system to the manufacturing firms.
She noted that, ‘Inspection activities at the various manufacturing facilities of cosmetics and household chemical industries over the years have revealed a number of GMP deficiencies for both premises and quality management systems which has necessitated the need for this training programme. She said.
She further noted the strengthening of Industrial Support Unit of the FDA to collaborate with the various organizations under the regulatory mandate of the Authority to achieve and maintain the expected standards.
