Father arrested for allegedly beating 13-year-old daughter to death over food

Isaac Adonteng, a 54-year-old mason, has been arrested by the Weija Divisional Police Command for allegedly beating his 13-year-old daughter, Celestine Adonteng—also known as ‘Baby’—to death at their home in Kokrobite. The assault reportedly occurred after she was accused of eating leftover food that her older sibling had stored in their room.

Local community members said the father often accused the girl of stealing, claiming she took food without permission. Witnesses say that after the brutal beating, Celestine was left struggling for her life under a mango tree before being smeared with oil and taken inside the house, where she is believed to have died.

According to an official statement from the Accra Regional Police Command on Thursday, 20 November, signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Isaac Adonteng allegedly assaulted his daughter with a cane, a metal pipe, and other objects after accusing her of taking food meant for her younger sibling. The police found Celestine unconscious during a visit prompted by a complaint. She was rushed to the Police Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The police recovered a cutlass and a metal pipe from the scene, believed to be instruments used in the attack. Isaac Adonteng remains in custody as investigations continue.

The Accra Regional Police Command issued a strong warning against the use of excessive physical force in disciplining children, emphasizing that such actions are unlawful and can have tragic consequences. Authorities are urging the public to report any cases of child abuse or domestic violence promptly to ensure protection and intervention.
