“Expert Calls for Centralized Trading Hub to Solve Roadside Market Chaos”

Local Government expert Mr. Issaka Kotei has shared his perspective on the ongoing decongestion exercise targeting roadside markets in the region. In an interview with Nana Dogbey on Ahotor FM, he shed light on the root causes of the issue and proposed thoughtful solutions.

According to Mr. Kotei, the problem originates from shop owners in formal market spaces, who primarily engage in wholesale trade, encouraging family members to sell their goods along the roadside. “Those who own shops in the market often distribute goods to family members who then sell them on the roadside.

This practice creates a ripple effect, as other traders see it as a lucrative strategy and begin to follow suit, abandoning their shops for the roadside. This concentration of activity overwhelms the facilities, creating congestion and safety issues,” he explained.

He emphasized that addressing this issue requires a holistic approach. “You can’t simply evict people from the roadside without providing viable alternatives. Most roadside traders can not compete with wholesale businesses because their operations are small-scale. They rely on buying from wholesalers to earn their livelihood. Forcing them off the streets without a plan will only exacerbate the problem.”

Mr. Kotei proposed a long-term solution that involves creating a centralized trading hub. “Between Ga North and Ga West, there’s government land that could be developed into a bulk market. A strategic location between Pokuase and Amasaman could serve as a central point for trading, accommodating northern corridor goods and easing pressure on roadside trading spots.”

He urged authorities to consider collaborative strategies that include consultations with stakeholders to create a sustainable solution that balances the needs of both formal market operators and roadside traders.
