President John Dramani Mahama has called for an education system where students succeed through genuine learning rather than examination malpractice or leaked answers.
He said stronger invigilation had significantly reduced organised examination malpractice and expressed satisfaction that recent examination results were increasingly reflecting the actual performance of students.
President Mahama made the remarks during a community engagement at the University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) in the Upper West Region.
The President said he would not engage in a detailed debate over the statistics surrounding the recent West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results, stressing that the figures were available for public examination.
He, however, welcomed what he described as the emergence of a more accurate reflection of students’ performance following improvements in the conduct and monitoring of examinations.
President Mahama said the country must move away from a culture where students expected access to leaked examination questions and answers.
He recalled instances in which students who faced disciplinary action for examination-related misconduct attacked teachers who attempted to enforce discipline.
According to him, such behaviour should no longer be tolerated within Ghana’s education system.
“Our children must succeed because they have learned, and our teachers must teach with integrity,” he said.
The President also highlighted reforms in the financing of Senior High Schools, saying government had introduced dedicated funding for schools and student feeding.
He said these interventions had helped reduce complaints from headmasters about delayed releases, inadequate funding and shortages of food.
President Mahama further reiterated the government’s plan to eliminate the double-track system by the end of 2027, following the securing of a US$300 million facility with the World Bank.
He said ending double-track would increase contact hours between teachers and students and allow all students in affected schools to attend and vacate at the same time.
