“Ex-PURC Board Member Dr. Nii Darko Asante Urges Caution on Energy Sector Mergers, Warns of Potential Risks”

Dr. Nii Darko Asante, a former Board member of the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), has urged the government to exercise caution in its decision to merge certain state entities within the energy sector.

According to him, while reforms can drive efficiency, hasty decisions without adequate consultation and planning could have significant negative consequences.

Dr. Asante’s comments come amidst increasing calls for the government to engage with stakeholders who will be directly affected by the proposed changes.

He emphasized the importance of a thorough, inclusive approach, noting that the complexities within the energy sector require careful consideration of the potential risks involved.

“Merging institutions without addressing the nuances of their operations and without the input of key players in the sector could lead to unintended disruptions,” Dr. Asante warned.

“The government must ensure that all voices, especially those from regulatory bodies, industry experts, and the workforce, are heard and factored into the decision-making process.”

He added that while restructuring may aim to streamline processes and cut costs, it should not be rushed.

Instead, a phased approach would allow for the identification of potential pitfalls and ensure that the new structure benefits the nation in the long term.

“If not handled correctly, this could destabilize the energy sector, affecting service delivery and investor confidence,” he noted.

In conclusion, Dr. Asante urged the government to prioritize stakeholder engagement and to approach any potential restructuring in the energy sector with the necessary diligence and foresight.
