Deputy Defence Minister Ernest Brogya Genfi has underscored the critical role military training plays in shaping Ghana’s youth, emphasizing its potential to foster discipline, patriotism, and a spirit of national service. Speaking at the passing-out ceremony of 453 Blue Water Guards on April 14, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering the younger generation through structured military programs.
Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Brogya Genfi highlighted President John Mahama’s vision of integrating military training into national youth initiatives. He stated, “The President firmly believes that military training serves as a dual-purpose tool—not only strengthening our defense and security preparedness but also cultivating values of discipline, patriotism, and a sense of duty among the youth. As part of this vision, discussions are underway to incorporate elements of military training into the National Service program.”
He praised the facilities at the Naval Base in Ezinlibo, describing them as a vital asset in realizing this transformative agenda. “These facilities are pivotal in nurturing the next generation of leaders who will uphold the ideals of service and dedication to our nation,” he noted.
A Call for Unity in Protecting Ghana’s Resources
The Deputy Defence Minister extended his gratitude to traditional leaders, whose support he described as instrumental in ensuring the success of the Blue Water Guards initiative. “To our esteemed traditional leaders, your unwavering support and wisdom are invaluable. We rely on your leadership to champion environmental protection and sustainable practices within your communities,” he said.
He also called on government agencies and civil society to collaborate in safeguarding Ghana’s natural resources. “Together, we must work across all sectors to build a cleaner, safer, and more sustainable Ghana,” he urged.
Blue Water Guards: Protectors of Ghana’s Water Bodies
The newly inducted Blue Water Guards were commended for their dedication to protecting Ghana’s water bodies from illegal mining activities, a menace threatening the nation’s environment and livelihoods. The initiative, which aims to employ 2,000 personnel this year, forms part of a broader strategy to combat galamsey and ensure sustainable development.
Charging the recruits with their mission, Mr. Genfi declared, “Your efforts have already borne fruit, and your contributions will leave a lasting legacy. You are pioneers, protectors, and patriots. Go forth and serve Ghana with unwavering pride.”
The Blue Water Guards initiative represents a comprehensive approach to preserving the country’s natural resources while providing the youth with opportunities to contribute meaningfully to national development. By equipping young people with military training and instilling a sense of duty, the government aims to create a disciplined, patriotic, and empowered generation dedicated to safeguarding Ghana’s future.
