Eni Ghana, in partnership with Vitol Upstream Ghana Ltd and the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), has commenced a new drilling campaign in the Offshore Cape Three Points (OCTP) block. The operation, centered on the Sankofa East 1X Side Track 2 well, signifies a key milestone in Ghana’s oil and gas sector.
The campaign employs the Deep Value Driller, a state-of-the-art drillship equipped with advanced automation and safety technology. This marks the rig’s inaugural operation in Ghana following its recent deployment in Côte d’Ivoire. According to Eni Ghana, this development underscores the partners’ dedication to ensuring Ghana’s energy security and enhancing the long-term sustainability of production in the OCTP block.
“This activity reflects the partners’ ongoing commitment to unlocking additional value from the OCTP block, contributing to Ghana’s energy future,” Eni stated in a press release.
Prior to the drilling, Eni and its partners conducted extensive stakeholder engagement along the coastal regions. Over 800 individuals, including fishermen, local leaders, and community members, participated in a sensitization program organized in collaboration with national institutions such as the Environmental Protection Agency, Petroleum Commission, Ghana Maritime Authority, Ghana Navy, Fisheries Commission, and the Ghana National Canoe Fishermen Council.
The initiative emphasized transparency, cooperation, and safeguarding marine ecosystems, while addressing concerns about the impact of drilling on local livelihoods.
Eni, active in Ghana since 2009, currently produces approximately 34,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The OCTP project is a joint venture with Eni holding a 44.4% stake, Vitol 35.6%, and GNPC 20%.
This latest phase in the OCTP block reaffirms the partners’ commitment to sustainable development in Ghana’s energy sector.
