Several high-profile Members of Parliament (MPs) of the New Patriotic Party have lost their slots to the National Democratic Congress whiles collation of ballots is still underway.
The defeats, which include long-serving MPs and party stalwarts, write a remarkable shift in Ghana’s political history.
Henry Quartey unseated in Ayawaso Central
The NPP’s Henry Quartey, who represented Ayawaso Central, lost his seat to Abdul Rauf Tongym Tubazu of the NDC. Quartey pulled 23,345 votes, significantly trailing Tubazu’s 29,755 votes. Charles Kwame Adams of the National Democratic Party (NDP) received just 163 votes.
KT Hammond loses Adansi Asokwa seat
Ace politician and MP for Adansi Asokwa, KT Hammond, was toppled by Godwin Animli Dorgbadzi Dorani of the NDC. Hammond secured 13,275 votes, while Dorani claimed victory with 14,229 votes. Mensah Abraham Justice of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) managed only 346 votes.
Ursula Owusu-Ekuful falls in Ablekuma West
Member of Parliament for Ablekuma West,Ursula, Owusu-Ekuful, also suffered defeat, polling 26,575 votes. Rev Kweku Addo of the NDC emerged victorious in the constituency, securing 31,866 votes to claim the seat.
Sylvester Tetteh loses in Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro.
Sylvester Matthew Tetteh, the MP for Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro, was defeated after receiving 27,888 votes. His opponent, Okle Felix Akwetey of the NDC, won decisively with 37,473 votes.
Twum Barimah brushed off in Dormaa East
In the Dormaa East Constituency, Twum Barimah lost his seat after amassing 12,050 votes from the total valid vote cast. The NDC’s Rachel Owusuaa narrowly defeated him with 12,310 votes, securing victory in the closely contested race.
Lydia Seyram Alhassan loses Ayawaso West Wuogon to NDC’s John Dumelo
In a stunning turn of events, John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, has been declared to have won the Ayawaso West Wuogon parliamentary seat. Dumelo took a commanding lead against incumbent MP Lydia Alhassan of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), winning almost all the polling stations that have concluded voting.
As at the time of this writing, only 46 out of 276 Constituencies have been confirmed by the Electoral Commission done with collation and the trend projects the NPP could lose more seats as final collation perpetrates.
These defeats of NPP giant MPs signal a monumental shift in the forthcoming ninth parliamentary representation since 1992, with the NDC making bold statements with their stunning captures.
