Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu Visits Labone SHS Following Dormitory Fire

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has paid a visit to Labone Senior High School (SHS) in Accra following a devastating fire outbreak that ravaged three girls’ dormitories. The incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon, left one dormitory completely destroyed while two others sustained partial damage.

The fire reportedly broke out while students were attending their afternoon prep sessions, sparing them from harm but causing extensive damage to personal belongings, including mattresses, books, and school supplies. Items salvaged by affected students were seen piled in front of the charred dormitories.

The minister arrived at the school early Monday morning to assess the extent of the damage and reassure students and staff of the government’s commitment to providing immediate relief. Addressing the school community, he pledged swift intervention to ensure all affected students are accommodated and that classes continue with minimal disruption.

“We will work closely with the Ghana Education Service (GES) and other stakeholders to provide temporary shelter and restore normalcy. Meanwhile, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has launched an investigation into the cause of the fire,” Mr. Iddrisu stated.

Accompanying the minister was a delegation from the Ghana Education Service, including regional and national officials, who also engaged with the school’s management.

Headmistress Rejoice Acolor expressed gratitude for the prompt response and highlighted steps being taken to support the students. “Some parents have taken their wards home temporarily, but we are working to ensure academic activities continue. Counselling sessions have been arranged for the affected students to help them cope with the trauma,” she said.

The Education Minister’s visit underscores the government’s commitment to addressing emergencies in educational institutions and ensuring the safety and well-being of students across the country.
