Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu Slams Police Over Trigger-Happy Officers

The Member of Parliament for Tamale South and Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has strongly criticized the Ghana Police Service for its failure to address the growing issue of trigger-happy officers who resort to excessive force.

Speaking in Parliament, the minister expressed deep concern over recent incidents of police brutality, emphasizing that the unchecked use of firearms by officers is undermining public trust in law enforcement. He accused the police leadership of failing to enforce strict disciplinary measures against officers who misuse their weapons, leading to avoidable injuries and loss of lives.

The police must protect, not to intimidate or harm innocent citizens,” Hon. Iddrisu stated.

We cannot continue to witness cases where officers, who are supposed to uphold the law, become the very source of fear in our communities.”

He urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, to take decisive action by ensuring thorough investigations, appropriate sanctions, and mandatory retraining programs for officers to prevent further incidents.
