ECG Marketing Officer Responds to Dumsor Complaints

Nii Quaye Cudjoe, the Marketing Officer for the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) at Tema has addressed concerns raised by some Ghanaians regarding recurring power outages, commonly referred to as “dumsor.”

Speaking to Citizen Kofi Owusu on Ahotor FM, Mr. Cudjoe explained that while faults occasionally occur in any power system, ECG remains committed to promptly addressing them. He emphasized that ECG’s primary focus is ensuring uninterrupted power supply to customers. “If our equipment develops a fault and you call us, we will do everything we can to restore power quickly so that residents can continue their activities,” he said.

Mr. Cudjoe also debunked the notion that ECG intentionally creates outages. “We are not happy when there is a power outage. In fact, when your power goes off, it’s a problem for us. The more customers use electricity, the more ECG benefits financially. If your power is off, you are not consuming, and that leads to losses for us. It’s in our best interest to ensure that power supply remains consistent,” he clarified.

Challenges Facing ECG

Addressing some of the challenges faced by the company, Mr. Cudjoe highlighted the issue of theft as a significant concern. “Recently, we’ve seen cases where individuals steal components like the fuses from transformers. These materials, which are vital for the transformers to function, are often sold in scrap markets,” he noted.

He explained that such incidents disrupt power supply in affected areas. “Sometimes, when customers call to report a power outage, we investigate and find that it’s not due to a technical fault but because someone has tampered with the transformer by stealing essential components. This is very disturbing because it hampers our ability to provide reliable service,” Mr. Cudjoe said.

A Call for Collaboration

Mr. Cudjoe urged the public to support ECG by reporting suspicious activities around transformers and other electrical installations. He reiterated that ECG’s goal is to ensure consistent and reliable power supply for all customers. “We are dedicated to improving our services, and we need the cooperation of the public to address these challenges effectively,” he concluded.

The ECG Marketing Officer’s remarks serve as a reminder of the shared responsibility in maintaining the integrity of Ghana’s power infrastructure while striving to minimize disruptions to electricity supply.
