ECG Boss Refutes Claims of Inferior Revenue Collection Compared to PDS, Calls Comparisons ‘Intellectual Dishonesty’

The Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has strongly refuted claims suggesting that Power Distribution Service’s (PDS) revenue collection performance was superior to that of ECG. Mahama labeled such comparisons as “intellectual dishonesty,” emphasizing that it is misleading to directly compare PDS’s revenue mobilization efforts with those of ECG without considering the differing circumstances under which both entities operated.

In a recent media briefing, Mahama asserted that ECG’s current revenue collection performance not only matches but surpasses the levels seen during the PDS era. He highlighted that ECG has implemented more effective strategies and technologies to enhance revenue collection, ensuring greater efficiency and accountability. Mahama also pointed out that the company has made significant strides in reducing power losses and improving customer service, further boosting its revenue streams.

He expressed concerns over the business model debates, questioning what model would be used if ECG were to be privatized or restructured like PDS. According to Mahama, any move towards privatization must take into account the unique challenges and operational realities faced by ECG, suggesting that a one-size-fits-all approach would be detrimental to the company’s goals of sustainable energy supply and financial stability.

Mahama reiterated ECG’s commitment to transparency and efficiency, urging stakeholders to recognize the progress made by the company rather than comparing it to the now-defunct PDS, which operated under different regulatory and market conditions. He called for a balanced perspective on the issue, underscoring the importance of evaluating ECG’s performance based on its current operational achievements and future potential.
