The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has announced plans to conduct by-elections in Nkoranza North, Nkoranza South, and several other districts across the country to fill vacant positions in local assemblies. These vacancies have arisen primarily due to the death of sitting members and unresolved electoral challenges.
In an official statement, the EC confirmed that the by-elections will cover districts such as Awutu Senya West, Agona West, Agona East, Ablekuma Central, La Dade-Kotopon, Weija-Gbawe, and Krowor, among others. The elections aim to restore representation in these areas and ensure smooth functioning at the district level.
Security Challenges Addressed in Key Areas
Some electoral areas, including Loagri Kukua, Wenchiki, Adibo, Bunburiga, and Tigenga, had previously been unable to hold elections due to security concerns or violence. For instance, a re-run in Loagri Kukua, West Mamprusi, was suspended after over-voting was detected in a polling station, but the process was delayed due to unrest. Similarly, elections in Kpunduli, Nanton, were disrupted by violence, prompting the EC to prioritize security arrangements for these areas before proceeding with voting.
The Commission assured the public that these areas are now deemed safe, with adequate measures in place to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
Call for Collaboration and Peace
The EC has reaffirmed its dedication to upholding Ghana’s democratic values by ensuring all affected electoral areas are duly represented. It urged political parties, traditional leaders, and all stakeholders to support the process by promoting peace and maintaining security during the elections.
The by-elections are expected to strengthen local governance and enhance development efforts in the affected districts.
