The integrity of the December 7th polls remains a concern amidst allegations of missing election kits, but any notion of compromise by the Electoral Commission is unsubstantiated. Despite the EC’s denial of missing items, recent revelations during the just-ended IPAC meeting have raised eyebrows.
Mahdi Jibril, Deputy Director of Elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), shed light on these discrepancies during an interview with Nana Alex Dogbe on Ahotor FM 92.3 in Accra. Meanwhile, the NDC has called for an independent investigation into the matter.
The EC clarified that only five laptops, not Biometric Verification Devices (BVDs), were missing, assuring the public that this would not affect the 2024 elections’ integrity. However, Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer of the NDC criticized the EC’s evasiveness and called for a thorough investigation by an external body.
Despite the EC’s request for information from the NDC regarding the robbery, the party insists on the EC’s responsibility to safeguard the machines and provide updates to the public. The focus is on the potential impact on the election’s integrity rather than pursuing criminal charges.
Paul N.K. Aborampah Mensah, Programmes Manager of the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), emphasized the importance of cooperation to resolve the issue, acknowledging the NDC’s role in bringing it to light.
